The sharp increase in interest in the Chinese language comes on the eve of a possible ban in the United States of the social network TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. In this context, more than half a million American TikTok users switched to the Chinese application Rednote, which was not translated into English, Reuters wrote.
According to app analytics provider Appfigures, a week ago Duolingo was one of the top 40 apps in the US App Store, but now the app ranks 19th in popularity.
The United States Supreme Court is scheduled to rule on the continuity of TikTok’s operations in the country on January 19. The app could stop working unless the US Supreme Court overturns a law requiring ByteDance’s owner to sell its stake to an American investor.
TikTok intends to stop operating its app in the United States on Jan. 19, according to Reuters people familiar with the matter. Users who try to open the app will see a notification directing them to a website with information about the ban. The company also plans to offer users the ability to download all their data, agency interlocutors said.
