The first step in reducing your exposure to toxic flame retardants is removing black plastic items from your home, according to Megan Liu, director of science and policy for the environmental advocacy group Toxic-Free Future. It is also recommended to reduce the use of plastic in general as it is a truly dangerous material.

The expert recommends using wooden and stainless steel cutlery instead of black plastic cutlery. Also avoid toys, hair accessories and other items made of this plastic.
