Eating cheese affects biomarkers, namely certain hormones and compounds in the body, according to a new study. Urea and testosterone, which are particularly associated with sleep apnea.

But the new study doesn’t look at how much cheese or which type of cheese is most beneficial. More research is needed on the link between diet and sleep apnea, says Angel Planells, a Seattle-based registered dietitian and national media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The study also had several limitations. In the study that focused only on people of European descent, some biomarkers that could affect the relationship between cheese consumption and sleep were not included in the study.
