According to Rubio, to achieve peace “the Russian Federation will have to make concessions, but it will also have to make concessions to Ukraine and the United States.” He emphasized that sanctions give Washington “pressure power” over Russia, so “sanctions and their lifting” should “be part of this dialogue to achieve <...> settlement.”
According to Rubio, the United States will not allow Russia to gain control of all of Ukraine, but kyiv will not be able to return all the territories under Moscow’s control.
US President-elect Donald Trump nominated Rubio to head the State Department in November. On January 10, the Financial Times reported on EU concerns about Trump’s possible lifting of sanctions against Russia. “The concern is that [Трамп] will cancel decisions [Байдена] only because Biden freed them,” said one of the newspaper’s interlocutors. “We need to know how this could affect us,” he added.
