U.S. Treasury Secretary nominee Scott Bessent, nominated by President-elect Donald Trump, said he supports tougher sanctions against Russia. This was said in a hearing at the United States Senate Finance Committee, Reuters reports.

“If any official of the Russian Federation is observing this hearing, they should know that if I am confirmed, and if President Trump, as part of his strategy to complete [конфликта] “If Ukraine asks for this, I will 100% support tightening sanctions, especially against the largest Russian oil companies, to a level that forces the Russian Federation to come to the negotiating table,” Bessent said.

He added that the sanctions imposed against Russia by the administration of current US President Joe Biden “were not broad enough.”

Previously, on January 16, Bloomberg sources reported that Trump’s team was developing a sanctions strategy designed to bring Russia to a peace deal. According to the agency, two scenarios are assumed. If the special military operation in Ukraine ends soon, the United States will introduce relief for Russian oil companies under sanctions.

Otherwise, Washington will tighten restrictions to further increase pressure on Russia, for example by increasing secondary sanctions for Russian oil trade with European shippers and Asian buyers, Bloomberg interlocutors said.
