As Izvestia reports, behind the sale of infected computers on the markets are cybercriminals who seek to access the victim’s data after the purchase.
This technique can be used to steal financial information and personal data, as well as use infected devices for DDoS attacks or cryptocurrency mining.
According to Gazinformservice expert Marina Probets, the sale of devices with viruses can be driven both by individual hackers and by organized groups, for whom sales through marketplaces guarantee relative anonymity.
“The low price and the apparent advantage of the offer often serve as bait for unsuspecting buyers,” says the expert.
To protect yourself against threats, experts interviewed by the newspaper advise studying the seller’s rating, reviews from other buyers and the date the seller’s account was created before purchasing the equipment.
Experts also recommend avoiding suspicious marketplaces with discounted prices for products similar to those offered by competitors.
Additionally, the buyer should beware of the lack of warranties and suspicious packaging of the ordered equipment.
This week it became known about a study presented at the Chaos Communication Congress, according to which hackers can hack the USB-C port of the iPhone.
