A new study found a link between taking weight-loss medications and their benefits to people’s cognitive and behavioral health. There is also a high risk of pancreatitis and kidney disease.
As part of their study, scientists from WashU Medicine analyzed anonymized medical records from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs database. The study examined information on more than 2 million veterans treated for diabetes from October 1, 2017, to December 31, 2023.
GLP-1RA drugs have been associated with significant health benefits. In particular, reducing the risk of seizures and addiction to alcohol, marijuana, stimulants and opioids. People taking weight-loss medications also had fewer suicidal thoughts, self-harm, bulimia and schizophrenia. They were less likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. True, in most cases this reduction is about 10−20%.
It also turns out that weight loss medications can negatively affect the pancreas and kidneys. These side effects are rare but can be very serious. Additionally, kidney dysfunction may be asymptomatic until it reaches an advanced stage with limited treatment options.
