Apple took its first steps in this field in late 2022 by investing $450 million to support the production of satellites and ground stations for satellite connectivity company Globalstar. Last November, Apple strengthened its position in the satellite services market by purchasing a 20% stake in Globalstar for $1.5 billion.

The company is currently actively expanding its team to further develop this technology. Job postings posted on Apple’s official website include Senior Regulatory Engineer and Strategic Operations Manager roles. The first position will involve working on long-term satellite communications strategy and coordinating with regulators, while the second position will involve developing and managing international satellite spectrum rights.

For now, Apple’s satellite communications are limited to the ability to send emergency messages when there’s no cellphone service or Wi-Fi, but the company’s plans go far beyond that.
