“Our first chip with the ‘Made in India’ label will be launched this year, and we are now looking at the next stage where we can attract equipment, materials and designers to India,” Vaisno said at the World Economic Forum in Davos (Quote by Business Standard).

The first Indian production chip is supposed to be a 28 nanometer processor. It is not as modern as 2nm processors from leading global manufacturers, however, it is still widely used in various industries such as automotive, home and industrial electronics.

In December 2021, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Semicon India program, under which 760 billion rupees were allocated for the development of the semiconductor ecosystem ($8.82 at the current rate).

Additionally, under Digital India Corporation, the government launched an Independent Division of the Indian Semiconductor Mission (ISM). It has administrative and financial autonomy for the formation and implementation of long-term strategies for the production of semiconductors and displays, as well as for the creation of a chip design ecosystem.

Earlier this month, Reuters wrote that the expected chip market volume in India will be $63 billion by 2026.

It is noteworthy that the first Indian production chip was supposed to appear in December 2024. Ashvini Vaisno has already announced the appearance of the first Indian processor at the World Economic Forum in Davos, but in January last year.
