Our brain consists of many cell types that perform unique functions despite the general DNA set. Differences are determined by a special genetic “code ılan that controls the activity of genes. Scientists have been studying this process for a long time, but now artificial intelligence algorithms help them.
Professor Stein Aertes team of VIB-KU Leuven Center applied deep education to decipher this “regulatory code ve and understand how it affects the development of the brain and the emergence of diseases. Using data on thousands of brain cells, mice and chicken, they were able to determine which genetic mechanisms were protected and which of different types of change.
Discovery was particularly interesting that some bird neurons in regulatory mechanisms resembled the cells of the deep layers of the new mammal cortex. This helps to better understand the evolution of the brain and explain why birds have such complex cognitive abilities despite the different structure of the brain compared to mammals.
This study offers new opportunities in medicine in addition to examining evolution. Similar models have already been used to examine skin cancer, and now they will help to understand the causes of neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease. Scientists also plan to expand the analysis by examining the brain of various animals from fish to deer and gate.
