Biohacker Patrick Paumen implanted numbers 32 into his body, from magnets to rfid chips. The 37-year-old Dutchman was recently interviewed by the BBC about body extensions.

“The cashiers’ reactions are priceless,” Patrick said of the contactless payment chip he installed in 2019. Instead of a card or smartphone, he pays by holding his left hand towards the ATM. Patrick had several RFID and NFC chips installed by the American biohacking company Dangerous Things. According to Biohacker, the procedure is no more painful than a pinch on the skin.

The implantation of the chips will be viewed by many as controversial, to say the least, but according to a European survey in 2021, 51% of the 4,000 surveyed would consider it a subcutaneous payment chip. Meanwhile, Patrick isn’t worried about the security risks: “Chip implants already have technology we use on a daily basis.” He also adds that the read range is limited, so the chips only work within a small electromagnetic field.
