According to the creator of Linux Linus Torvalds, these old processors have no time to spend time in fashion and support. Supporting such chips complicates the seeds and intervenes in the development of modern functions. This was already – in 2012, the support of old Intel 386 processors was stopped.

Now minimum requirements for starting Linux are Pentium and above processors with support for modern instructions such as CMPXCHG8B and TSC timer. The old 486 does not have these opportunities.

However, enthusiasts can still start old Linux versions in these chips, but without modern updates and without protection.
