The researchers started with the idea of implanting nanoneedles into the eye, which degrade over time and release the drug. These needles are so small that they do not cause pain or discomfort. To inject them into the eye, the nanoneedles were attached to a contact lens and then dissolved without leaving a trace.
The scientists have already tested their product on rabbits and found that the lenses help reduce corneal neovascularization almost completely (corneal neovascularization is a pathological condition in which newly formed vessels grow on the corneal surface) after just 28 days.
