If the body has too little vitamin D, calcium cannot maintain normal bone mass and strength. In general, this mineral is required by the body for bone growth. Experts note that after 51 years, women should take 1200 milligrams of calcium per day, men – 1000 milligrams.

According to Amanda Lane, nutritionist and founder of Healthful Lane, vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. At the same time, with age, this vitamin decreases, as a person spends less time in the sun. Adults aged 51 to 70 should get at least 15 micrograms of vitamin D per day, according to one expert.

Vitamin D is found in only a few foods. These are beef liver, fish, eggs (more precisely, yolk), mushrooms exposed to ultraviolet radiation.

As a supplement, vitamin D occurs as vitamin D3 or vitamin D2. Scientific studies show that vitamin D3 is the most effective of the two.
