A significant protective effect was in women: those who consume at least four portions of fruit each day were smaller indicators of pulmonary function falling by PM2.5 under the conditions of high air pollution. According to the authors of the study, on average, men eat less fruits than women.

Probably, such a positive fruit effect is associated with antioxidants in its compositions and anti -inflammatory substances. These components can neutralize oxidative stress and stop inflammatory processes that provoke inhalation of small particles.
