The tests were conducted in a lava cave near the city of Mudanjiang in Heilongjiang province, according to the South China Morning Post. It’s a place with conditions reminiscent of lava tunnels on the moon, where Beijing plans to build a habitable base in the future.
The development is being carried out by experts from Peking University together with the Institute of Artificial Intelligence. Two prototypes participated in the tests: Anteater and Salamander.
The first is equipped with powerful “front legs” and a manipulator for overcoming obstacles and collecting samples. The latter has soft wheels that can change shape to move in rocky and narrow spaces.
Tests have shown that robot dogs can consistently perform research tasks in complex environments where human presence is impossible.
China sees lava caves as an ideal location for future moon bases; they protect equipment from extreme temperature changes and radiation.
Previously, China confirmed plans to launch the Chang’e-7 probe in 2026 and build the International Lunar Research Station together with Russia by 2030.
