Scientists have created a circuit with zero electrical resistance to demonstrate the phenomenon of quantum tunneling (the ability of atoms and subatomic particles to pass through barriers that they theoretically should not pass through). Before this it existed only in theory, but his experiments showed that tunneling was real and could be used in physical circuits.

These discoveries later led to the development of modern transistors and the quantum computing industry.

Clark led a team at the University of California, Berkeley, where he continues to serve as Professor Emeritus. Martinnis currently teaches at Yale University and UC Santa Barbara, and Devore is the chief scientist at Google Quantum AI.
