A day after official support for Windows 10 ends, some users are already deciding whether to upgrade to Windows 11 or stay the same. Although hundreds of millions of computers are not compatible, there is a significant percentage of computers that can run the latest version of the operating system. Nevertheless, Microsoft managed to break the Windows 11 installation tool at the most inopportune moment.
Microsoft has confirmed that the Media Creation Tool is “broken” and not working on some Windows 10 computers. Also known as MCT (Media Creation Tool), the utility allows you to create a bootable USB drive with the latest version of Windows 11 for a clean install. The tool downloads the ISO and configures the removable device to install or restore Windows.
In an update on its support website, Microsoft says that the latest update there is a bug in the media creation tool:
“The Windows 11 Media Creation Tool, version 26100.6584, released September 29, 2025, may not work as expected when used on Windows 10 devices. The Media Creation Tool may close unexpectedly without displaying any error messages.”
Problem appears on computers with Windows 10H2latest stable version of the operating system. Microsoft noted that they are already working on a solution to this problem and it will be released as a separate patch. The only alternative at the moment is to download the Windows 11 ISO image from the official website.
An error prevents Windows 11 from being loaded onto a USB drive for a clean installation.
The failure of a media creation tool comes at the worst possible time. After months of aggressively campaigning to get us to upgrade to Windows 11, Microsoft failed to realize that it was impossible to do so using this popular utility. This leaves users with two options: download the installation wizard or lower the ISO and use a tool like Rufus for a clean installation.
The first option is the easiest for the average user as it keeps your documents and installed programs unchanged. You just need to check the compatibility of the equipment in advance and leave all the work to the master. While this sounds ideal, it can also lead to previous errors and problems due to old configurations.

clean installation of windows 11 This is usually preferred when maximum performance and stability are required. By doing this on a clean partition, we reduce the risk of conflicts between drivers, residual files, or legacy configurations. The only argument against this is that we will have to reinstall programs, reconfigure devices and download our backup documents.
Although Microsoft offers the option to download ISOs, the website also has issues and does not allow you to do so. At the time of writing, the page freezes when clicking the download button and displays the message: “There was a problem processing your request. Please try again later.”

It’s best to wait a while for Microsoft to iron out the bugs before considering installing Windows 11. Remember that although support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, 2025, you still have the option to extend the updates for another year at no cost.
