Researchers have created a paper-thin lamp using quantum dots, tiny particles that convert electricity into colored light. By choosing precise ratios of red, yellow-green and blue quantum dots, they were able to obtain light as close to the sunlight spectrum as possible. This improves color reproduction and reduces eye fatigue.
The device consists of several thin layers: transparent glass with a conductive coating, polymers, a mixture of quantum dots, metal oxide particles, and a top layer of aluminum or silver. The thickness of the light layer is only a few tens of nanometers, meaning the lamp is almost as thin as a sheet of paper.
In tests, the new LED showed excellent results: at a voltage of about 11.5 volts, it emits bright and warm white light, close to natural sunlight. It also contains less blue radiation.
