The drug is based on a modified TRAIL protein with antitumor activity. Peptides have been added that bind to proteins on the surface of both cancer cells and the blood vessels that feed the tumor.
The researchers tested the drug’s effect on glioblastoma and pancreatic cancer cells, as well as vascular cells. The protein triggered the programmed death of cancer cells and suppressed the division of vascular cells. In experiments conducted on mice, the growth of glioblastoma tumors was reduced by 74% and the growth of pancreatic cancer was reduced by 69%. No side effects were observed in animals.
