Despite ambitious plans to produce 250,000 Cybertrucks per year, current sales levels are only around 20,000 units per year, or 90% behind target, according to the source.
As Electrek points out, a production line with a load factor that doesn’t exceed 10% is a serious problem for an automaker, and in the case of Tesla, the situation is even more dire. Despite relatively low production volumes, the company is struggling to keep up with its Cybertruck inventory.
To get out of this situation, Elon Musk developed an unconventional approach: he instructed his private companies to purchase hundreds, if not thousands, of these electric vehicles. And these machines were recently seen delivered to xAI’s offices.
Also last week, SpaceX purchased hundreds of these electric pickup trucks for use at Starbase. The company expects to receive a significant number of these vehicles in the coming weeks.
And supposedly on the sidelines, this information was also confirmed by Tesla’s chief Cybertruck engineer, Wes Morrill: “It would be great if the internal combustion engine Tesla and SpaceX fleets were replaced by the Cybertruck. It was always part of our dream when we were developing this. We had no idea how difficult it would be to photograph the fleet on the launch pad. We look forward to the sequel.”
