The main purpose of the new rules is unification and environmental friendliness, lawmakers write. Now, just like smartphones and tablets, a single cable and power supply will be able to work with multiple devices. The law covers power supplies up to 240 W, which must support the USB-PD standard.
Manufacturers are required to indicate wattage on the unit, port, and cable and use the new “Partner Charger” logo to help customers easily identify compatible devices. Chargers above 10W must meet minimum energy efficiency requirements, and wireless charging must reduce consumption in standby mode.
An important innovation is mandatory surge protection for some devices such as routers. Some categories excluded: UPS, medical devices, toys, electric scooters, and wet conditions.
