At the pedestrian crossing on the Berezhkovskaya embankment in Moscow, a traffic light with a biometric camera was tested to recognize pedestrians’ faces. The system can still identify a person, but not the identity of the criminal.

A traffic light with facial recognition system is inaugurated in Moscow

“Photo recording involves showing the trajectory of movement of a pedestrian and a traffic light signal,” Road Safety magazine quotes the words of the head of the Moscow traffic police department, Alexander Bykov.

Bykov said that if a pedestrian violates traffic rules, his image will appear on an electronic board “next to the place of the violation,” but he will not receive a fine.

According to the head of the traffic police department, to bear administrative responsibility, law enforcement agencies must obtain biometric data of all citizens. That is, the provision of biometric data should become “an obligation, not a right.”

To this end, Bykov proposes to amend the Code of Administrative Offenses and the legislation on personal data. The traffic police representative also added that neural networks can help reduce traffic accidents caused by electric scooter drivers.

In the fall of 2023, Russians were allowed to revoke consent for the processing of biometric data through Gosuslugi. Until now, this could only be done at the MFC by written request.
