The idea of forming a union emerged after the success of World of Warcraft employees forming the Warcraft Gamemakers Guild last year. These were followed by mergers of employees working on Diablo and Overwatch. CWA currently represents more than 1,900 Blizzard employees.

The media writes that the creation of a new union comes at a critical time. So over the summer, Microsoft made large-scale cuts to its gaming division, including suspending development of Warcraft Rumble. Previously, union activism was possible thanks to neutrality agreements that Microsoft signed with the CWA in 2022 and 2024, which protected employees’ right to organize. However, Activision Blizzard’s contract expires in October 2025, which could make the formation of new unions difficult in the future.

The company signed its first neutrality agreement to satisfy regulators by purchasing Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion, but experts say that once the deal is completed, Microsoft could change its approach to organizing employees.
