The Meryan ax is an artifact typical of the narrow-blade axes characteristic of the Finno-Ugric peoples of the early Middle Ages, with a long narrow blade measuring 12 x 6.6 cm and weighing 550 grams. It was most likely used both for work and as a weapon.
The find dates back to 10-13. It was made during excavations in a cemetery area associated with an ancient settlement dating back to centuries BC. After the restoration is completed, the ax will be included in the museum collection and will be exhibited in various exhibitions.
The ax found at Shultz was the first such artifact discovered outside the Sarsky settlement. This find provides important information about the material culture of the Meri countryside.
“The sensation of the archaeological season is a 10th-century Meryan ax near Rostov the Great. Archaeological excavations have opened another page in the early history of the Rostov land. A unique iron ax unique to Old Mary has been discovered,” the museum reported on the VK social network.
