Experts say that foods high in refined carbohydrates (sugar) and fat can be addictive. Therefore, researchers from the University of Michigan decided to find out what influences the formation of such an addiction in humans. Scientists have suggested that this may be due to heredity.

Overall, it is estimated that one in five people become addicted to highly processed foods. This addiction is characterized by strong cravings for food, loss of control over consumption, and inability to reduce the amount of food eaten.

According to the study’s lead author, Lindsay Hoover, people whose parents once suffered from alcohol dependence may be more susceptible to developing a junk food addiction. They are also more likely to experience problems with alcohol, tobacco, vaping, and marijuana.

The results of the study were published in the journal Psychology of Addictive Behaviors.
