You may think that you can reduce the negative effects of junk food with physical activity. Thus, scientists from the University of Sydney in Australia learned that this was not the case at all. After analyzing data from the British Biobank for 346,627 people in the UK for April 2007 – December 2020, they concluded that the risk of death is still increased with regular consumption of junk food and exercise.
In general, experts identified such concepts as “high-quality diet” and “low-quality diet” during the study. The first contained at least 4.5 cups of vegetables or fruit per day, at least two servings of fish per week, and no more than two servings of processed meat per week, and less than five servings of red meat per week. The low-quality diet included large amounts of processed foods, red meat, and few vegetables, fruits, or fish.
It turns out that a combination of a healthy diet and exercise can reduce the chances of contracting fatal diseases by 17%. At the same time, a poor-quality diet only increases the risk of death. Experts also found that junk food increased the odds of developing heart disease by 19% and developing PDAR cancer (a type of cancer associated with obesity) by 27%.
