AMD has announced the new Ryzen Pro 6000 series computers based on the Zen 3+ architecture. There are also some new energy efficient Ryzen Pro 5000 chipsets coming out. The refresh is designed for professional laptops and should provide up to 1.3x better CPU performance and 2x better GPU performance than the Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U. The new 5000 and 6000 series SOCs will be available on select business notebooks in Lenovo’s ThinkPad and ThinkBook lineups, as well as the HP G9 editions of the EliteBook and ProBook, starting in the second quarter of 2022.

Like previous generations, the new Ryzen Pro 6000 series also consists of H and U series. The 6000 H(S) models have relatively high clock speeds and are performance oriented. All of these SOCs have a TDP of 35 or 45 watts. The U variants are designed for lighter tasks and balance lower clock speeds with energy efficient performance. Both new Pro 6000 U models have 28W tdp. All Ryzen (Pro) 5000 U refreshes have a TDP of 15W.

That doesn’t change the fact that all new socs are optimized for professional use, according to AMD; Compared to an undisclosed Alder Lake i7, the 6000 series chips are said to be 17 percent faster when running Microsoft Office programs like Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Tasks like video calling, streaming, and web browsing should also cost tens of percent less energy.

The new chipsets are baked at 6nm, which is a minor upgrade compared to the 7nm nodes of the Zen 3 architecture. The smaller scale the chips are made of brings some advantages. For example, such a chip can produce better performance per watt and the relative energy consumption is reduced.

As for the graphics microarchitecture, AMD will stay with RDNA 2 for this refresh. By the way, these are the first mobile processors from the red camp to use this architecture. This means that the chips support HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.0, among other things. Later this year, the first graphics cards with next-generation RDNA will be released.
