5G is finally becoming a reality in Brazil: some capitals in the country, including São Paulo 5G SA (standalone) and 5G NSA (non-standalone), providing more power in use. The new offerings can reach speeds in the Gbps range as long as you’re in range, have a compatible mobile phone and an active SIM card.

With the advent of technology, consumers may have doubts about how 5G works. To assist customers, carriers have already provided information on how to use “pure 5G” and whether SIM cards can be swapped.

Difference between 5G DSS, SA and NSA?

“Real 5G” is available in Brazil in two standards that guarantee speeds around 1 Gbps. 5G Standalone (SA) uses a proprietary infrastructure and guarantees low latency, while the new NSA (non-standalone) version still uses 4G cores, providing high speed but lower response time performance.

New versions of 5G guarantee much higher speeds than the 5G DSS already available by operators in Brazil. The standard guarantees support for faster networks than traditional 4G, but uses the entire network structure of the previous mobile internet standard.

It is important to note that despite the advantages of pure 5G, it is not so easy to guarantee full connection speed these days. After all, carriers are gradually adding support for the technology, and the quality of the connection depends on various factors, from the distance from the connected devices to the antennas.

Will I need to change chips?

Regarding chip and plan change, the situation is dependent on each operator and technology usage. While it’s standard that you need a compatible mobile phone to take advantage of the innovation, SIM replacement can vary.

Check out the information posted by Vivo, Claro and Tim on the subject.

Users who want to take advantage of Claro’s 5G NSA will not need to replace their chips to enjoy the innovation. However, they will need to replace the chip to use 5G SA, which guarantees better latency rates. It’s worth noting that the company calls both its connectivity offerings 5G+, which could cause even more confusion for users.

Like Claro, Vivo offers the new 5G without the need to replace the chip, but using the SA version will require replacing the component.

TEAM

TIM allows the use of 5G SA without the need for chip swapping, but it is necessary to have a TIM Black or TIM Black Familia plan with 50GB internet package which is free for the first year. It is not necessary to change SIM or plan to use 5G NSA networks.
