According to Nikkei, Apple has asked manufacturers on the island to label components for mainland China as “Chinese Taipei” or “Taiwan, China”. Labels are required to comply with a longstanding but previously unenforced rule that requires imported goods to indicate that an island is part of the PRC.

Apple felt that using the phrase “Made in Taiwan” could lead to delivery delays, fines, and complete non-delivery. Interestingly, Taiwan itself requires a place of origin on exported goods: either “Taiwan” or the official name of the country “Republic of China”.
