More than five billion people would starve to death during a full-blown conflict, the researchers say. Computer simulations have shown that soot emissions into the upper atmosphere will block sunlight. This will cause worldwide crop shortages.

Overall, scholars have identified six military scenarios: five minor conflicts between India and Pakistan, and a major war between the US and Russia. According to the researchers, in the event of a domestic war between India and Pakistan, the average global food production will decrease by 7% in five years. In the worst case, with the participation of the United States and Russia, this figure will rise to 90 percent three or four years after the end of hostilities.

As the lead author of the study put it, “the data tell us something. We must prevent nuclear war.”
