Android is by far the most widely used smartphone operating system in the world, with iOS comfortably in second place. A trend analysis by StockApps shows that Apple has been stealing market share from Google’s ox in recent years.
In July 2018, Android’s share was 77.32 percent and iOS 19.4 percent. By January 2022, Android was down about 8 percent to 69.74 percent and iOS was up over 6 percent to 25.49%. The remaining 1.58 percent is on various smaller operating systems.
An interesting geographical distribution of market share can be seen. In Africa, where Apple devices are out of reach for many people, 84 percent use Android and only 14 percent use iOS. A similar thing can be seen in Asia and South America, with a dominance of 81 percent and 90 percent for Google, where Apple has to settle with 18 percent and 10 percent, respectively. In North America and Oceania, Apple again beat Google by 54 percent to 45 percent.
