Telegram will probably start selling unique nicknames and addresses for channels. Pavel Durov hinted at this in a post about the success of the TON auction.
Post published by Durov on his Telegram channel. In it, Durov wrote that he was delighted with the success of the TON auction, as a result of which the domain names Wallet.ton and casino.ton were sold for tokens equivalent to $260,000 and $244,000, respectively.
“If TON could achieve such results, imagine how successful Telegram with its 700 million users could be if we auctioned @reserved usernames, links to groups and channels,” Durov said.
Durov explained that, in addition to millions of memorable addresses, all four-letter usernames could be for sale.
“This would create a new platform where username holders could transfer them to interested parties in secure transactions, with ownership secured on the blockchain using NFT-like smart contracts,” the Telegram founder explained.
Emoticons and stickers may later become part of this market, Durov added.
“We are inclined to try TON as the underlying blockchain for our future market,” Pavel Durov concluded.
In 2018, Pavel Durov started raising money to launch the TON blockchain platform and issue the Gram cryptocurrency. More than 170 investors from all over the world invested in the project, including Roman Abramovich, Yuri Milner, Sergey Solonin. The total amount of funds raised was $1.7 billion.
The TON project was curtailed after the US Securities and Exchange Commission recognized the Gram cryptocurrency as a security. In 2020, Pavel Durov officially announced the closure of the TON project.
In June, Telegram launched a paid subscription. Its users get access to premium features, such as a ban on sending voice and video messages, translating voice messages to text, and increased download limits.
