One in two online shoppers in Russia have been involved in fake purchases at least once, that is, they bought a product with the deliberate intention of returning it. There are more men among those buyers than women, and they live mainly in Kazan, Yekaterinburg and Perm.
The results of the study were shared with RB.RU at the analytical agency A2:Research. An online survey was conducted among 1.6 thousand regular online shoppers aged 18-55.
47% of respondents made fake purchases at least once in their life. 60% of these buyers are men. The cities where most buyers with fake shopping experience live are Kazan (60%), Yekaterinburg (58%), Perm (57.9%).
The agency recalled the arrest in 2022 of fraudsters who bought expensive equipment, disabled it and then returned it, allegedly with a manufacturing defect. The court returned the money for the “defective” goods, and the scammers put up a good product for sale.
According to the study, every third online shopper makes purchases at least once a month. 5% of those surveyed do it every day.
