Various applications downloaded from RuStore to smartphones without Google services work poorly (do not show geolocation, do not support voice input, etc.). VK encourages app developers to switch to their Russian counterparts, but market players are forced to admit that such apps simply don’t exist.
Users found that when downloading apps from RuStore, for example, on an Android Huawei model, where there is no pre-installed Google services (GMS), some food or travel delivery services do not work properly.
Kommersant reviewed consumer complaints and confirmed that many (Sheremetyevo Airport, Ostrovok, Chaikhona No. 1, Tutu.ru, etc.) actually experience failures when determining geolocation, processing SMS messages, or when trying to enter voice data.
The Burger King app refuses to work at all, giving an error: no Google services.
However, it is not about RuStore. Similar problems with the application will also occur when downloading from any other store: after all, the problem lies precisely in the absence of pre-installed GMS services.
So far, VK sees only one way to solve the problem – to warn users about possible crashes of applications downloaded from RuStore when installed on smartphone models without Google services.
At the same time, developers are encouraged to switch to “Russian equivalent services – analogues of GMS”.
It is not easy to understand exactly what the services refer to. Pavel Golub, co-founder of the digital platform development company arcsinus, frankly admits that there is no component package on the domestic market that is completely similar to GMS.
Huawei, on the contrary, has its own developments – HMS is practically an analogue of GMS. And developers can solve the problem of users by creating applications that exactly support HMS services.
Theoretically, domestic developers can still license individual components from other companies; for example, take cards from Yandex or 2GIS owned by Sber. But this will increase the size of the apps, which is a disadvantage for promotion.
Developing apps simultaneously with GMS and HMS (or other equivalent, if listed) can be a hassle for downloading to other app stores besides RuStore.
