google presented a new service with a focus on health and the environment. The search engine will soon show the values of air quality of major cities. For now, the news is only about the United States, India and some metropolitan cities in Australia.
It’s very simple: just search for the place name on Google, plus the search query ‘sky quality’, to obtain detailed information on air pollution. All data is provided by PurpleAir and airnow.gov. At the moment, Google has not provided any information about the possible debut of the service, including in Europe and in Italy.
Strangely enough, in some cities Google not only gives general results, but you can also look in detail at the air quality values of each neighborhood or municipality. Google also ensures that the user gets information about the drive from which the data comes. With the aim of obtaining results related to an even more limited area, the user can also choose to view the data provided by the so-called air sensorie low cost and portable sensors. The latter, of course, give a rough and less accurate estimate, but are still useful for obtaining information about specific areas.
The new tool works on both mobile and desktop, as well as the official Google app. Unfortunately, not only is the service not available for Italian cities, but it is not even usable from our country, in the sense that to view the air quality data of the cities involved in the project, one must necessarily be resident in the US, India or Australia.
