The changes will come into effect on September 16, as indicated in the message from the Lithuanian State Food and Veterinary Service. The department reported that from this day on the animals must undergo a serological test for antibodies against the rabies virus, after which they will receive a special document.
Russia and Belarus were excluded from the list of countries that effectively meet anti-rabies requirements.
“Last year, 63 animals transported for commercial purposes were not allowed to enter Lithuania due to inconsistencies in accompanying documents, transport conditions or the animal’s identification number,” the department noted.
Starting in September, dogs, cats and ferrets in transit will be required to be tested for rabies antibodies at an accredited laboratory. Its list is on the official website of the European Union. Today a microchip or a subcutaneous tattoo and a rabies vaccine are still sufficient.
We previously wrote that Aeroflot allowed pets to be transported in the next passenger seat in the aircraft cabin.
