Most microwave popcorn bags are coated with PFAS (ie, perfluoroalkyls and polyfluoroalkyls). These harmful substances in the cooking process can easily get into it.

Experts say manufacturers add PFAS to the inside of their popcorn bags. This prevents oil from being absorbed and igniting the bag.

Results of a 2019 study showed that those who regularly ate microwaved popcorn had much higher levels of PFAS in their blood. Especially 63 percent above average.

Chemicals such as PFAS affect the immune system and reduce the effectiveness of vaccines. Also, high levels of these substances have been associated with high cholesterol, a slight decrease in infant birth weight, changes in liver enzymes, preeclampsia in pregnant women, and an increased risk of kidney or testicular cancer.
