US authorities have banned semiconductor maker Nvidia from exporting to Russia and China two types of processors needed to speed up machine learning tasks. This is stated in the company’s statement, which was filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
According to the document, on August 26, US officials added a new license requirement for all company products containing the upcoming A100 and H100 integrated circuits.
The requirement also applies to any future processors that can match the performance of the A100.
“[Власти] indicated that the new license requirement would eliminate the risk that products could be used or redirected to a “military end use” or “military end user” in China and Russia,” Nvidia said in a statement.
The company predicts it could lose $400 million in potential sales in China due to the new rules. Nvidia shares fell 6.6% in after-hours trading on Wednesday, according to Reuters.
On July 1, Nvidia stopped renewing and selling licenses for its software to Russian companies. Because of this, prices for cloud gaming services have already started to rise.
