Since January, sales of condoms in pharmacies have decreased by 16.4%, in stores – by 6.6%. The last contraceptive boom was in March.

At the same time, sales of alternative contraceptives and condom sales in markets are growing. Analysts from DSM Group and NielsenIQ partly explained the change in Russians’ preferences for savings on the cost of contraception and decreased sexual activity, share the results of a study by Vedomosti.

The demand for hormonal oral contraceptives in pharmacies has grown by 11% during this time. Since January, 8.5% more vaginal rings, ovules, intrauterine therapeutic systems and others have been sold. Although in the last three years, this type of contraception has shown a decline.

Dmitry Gusev, head of the hospital’s outpatient gynecology department on Michurinsky Prospekt of the Fomin Clinic network, said the demand for alternative contraceptives will continue to grow. Using them is much cheaper than buying condoms: birth control pills cost 700-1500 rubles a month, a pack of 12 Durex Classic condoms can cost up to 1300 rubles.
