Researchers studied about 2000 healthy people for many years (average age 62 years). They evaluated their eating habits. In particular, scientists were interested in the so-called pro-inflammatory diet. This includes simpler sugars, cholesterol, saturated fats and fried foods.

These people were found to have smaller brains and less gray matter, an early marker of dementia. Men on the pro-inflammatory diet showed signs of small vessel stroke.

Also, people with depressive symptoms had a slightly higher risk of developing frailty.
