Five years ago, scientists first tried to create nanodiamonds from polystyrene. They bombarded the material with a powerful X-ray laser. This process quickly heated and compressed the polystyrene to 5,000 kelvin.

Now pretty much the same thing has been done with PET. The scientists also found that the presence of oxygen increased the formation of diamonds.
