In a recent study published in Neurology, scientists found that people who get the flu shot are less likely to have a stroke. However, more research is needed to determine the cause of this effect.
As part of the study, experts evaluated ischemic stroke. This type of stroke is considered the most common. The experts of this study examined the health database in Spain. From this, they selected data on people over the age of 40 who had their first stroke in a 14-year period. In total, there were 14,322 people who had a stroke and 71,610 who had never had a stroke.
After analyzing all the data, it turned out that 41.4% of the stroke survivors had the flu shot. Among those who were vaccinated but did not have a stroke, there were 40.5% of such people. At the same time, those vaccinated were older than the latter and had high cholesterol and high blood pressure. After taking into account all the necessary factors, the scientists found that people who got the vaccine had a 12% lower risk of stroke than those who didn’t get the flu vaccine.
