This year marks 9 years since the release of the original The Last of Us.
Just a year later, the exclusive PlayStation was upgraded for the next generation of consoles and received a remaster with improved graphics and support for 60 FPS. Then, obviously, Naughty Dog went above and beyond with this game and got a sequel in 2020.
But a week ago, a remake of The Last of Us was released, which caused a mountain of controversy about the changes. From screenshots and videos on YouTube
We have already played the novelty and are in a hurry to share our impressions. Decent remake or not? We understand.
What is this money for?
No, I don’t want to say that the developers did their job badly. This is not the case, and this version of the game has its fat pluses.
And I can definitely say that the picture began to look better. And in some cases, directly “dump of the head.”
I remember how all versions of TLOU went through at different times: a reader from Media Markt and the purchase of a PlayStation 3 (at that time I had an Xbox 360, and I didn’t see the point in taking a curling iron for myself), switched to a new PlayStation 4, the first took the exclusive console as a basis and a few years later replayed the game on the PlayStation 5 again.
And even after so much time, a slightly better version of the statistics was deposited in my head than it actually was. This became visible in the TLOU remaster.
Everything has changed here.. Some more and some less. How artists and designers redrawn the environment. It has become richer and more detailed. Absolutely all models have been replaced here: from small bushes to buildings and infected.
In some places you can even see how the engine from the second part is used. And here comes an important claim. Visible only in places, partially, frequently visited.
Yes, the graphics are downright prettier, in particular, facial animation and character models that have become less caricatured and more realistic. And due to this, you are a little more imbued with both the chapters themselves and the environment, which began to reveal their micro-stories in even more detail.
The problem is that the story hasn’t changed at all.: there are no staged scenes, they have not been played out for a long time, “gags” and so on have been noted. That is, you can’t call the game exactly the remake that everyone was waiting for (waited after all, right? Or not?). it not the level of Resident Evil 2 or even Mafia. This is something between a remaster and a remake, because we need to keep exactly the old story game that ends up in holes.
An important part of the changes was absorbing completely new lighting and particles. In many places, floating dust, spore particles and much more are visible. The light is different from many scenes. For example, the same sunken metro, where almost nothing could be seen before, but now it is completely different with lighting, rays and an abundance of details.
However, for example, it can be seen that the design of locations and their interaction for the most part stuck in 2014. This is especially true for the second point.
Yes, pieces fly off from the shots into the walls, plaster crumbles and so on. But the objects themselves in most zones can hardly be called active. They are glued to their point and cannot be moved. Not even a damn bottle (unless it’s used for gameplay elements).
They promised new gameplay, but got it
Do not even hope that Joel will learn to crawl or even dodge attackers. Most of the gameplay features of the rescuers for TLOU Part II, and not very important elements were transferred to Part I.
Replaced a lot of animations, including combat. Now everything looks even more realistic, but still just as slow, although it feels just a little bit faster than before).
The developers have not forgotten about the DualSense gamepad either. They tried to use its features, but not always successfully. For example, I do not feel the tactile difference between asphalt, carpet and grass, as I feel, for example, in Horizon Forbidden West.
But all really weapons now do not feel otherwise. It became heavier and with greater impact. At the same time, you feel this difference with your hands. The string tension of the bow is taken from the same “Horizon” or ASTRO’s Playroom.
Enemy AI has also been updated. Enemies are smarter: They actively use cover and flank heroes more often. But they still do not react to the moving Ellie. She can even sit in front of them in stealth moments and they won’t give a damn about her.
As for the voice acting, it remained the same. However, this has its own small drawback. Sometimes there is a desynchronization between the spoken text and the movement of the lips. TLOU is still at the same mediocre level. Thank you for keeping it that way and not completely cutting it out. Who needs it, you can change the voice acting to English and leave Russian subtitles.
Take only on sale
The Last of Us Part I has really changed. It’s not the level of a remaster, but it’s far from the best remake either.
select $70 price tag, I can only say my ‘fi’ about Naughty Dog. This is incredible impudence on the demand side: the quality of the remake is completely out of proportion to the price. With a stretch, you can take it only for 799 Turkish liras (2600 rubles), but this is a lot for such a project.
If you want to take TLOU Part I, then it’s better to wait for the sale, when the game will fall in price by at least 15%. You will get a good gaming experience that will be returned with the funds spent.
