In an article published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, scientists from the United States found that people who want to please their new acquaintances need to say as little as possible for it. Specifically, they believe that their explanation in a conversation should take about 45% of the time. But such a belief turned out to be flawed when tested.

In a recent study, experts randomly distributed among people (116 people) how much they should talk to a new interlocutor. In other words, there were participants who spoke 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% or 70%.

Scientists have found that the more people join a conversation, the more their new acquaintances like them. This is because the more a person learns about another, the more likely they are to find something in common with him. That’s why we usually like people who openly share information about themselves.

Also, when talking to new acquaintances, people do not fully understand how others will make an impression of them. The fact is that people often do not get carried away with some details of the interlocutor, but create the overall impression of a conversation with him.
