HE YouTube seems to be testing Ability to limit 4K resolution only to your Premium subscribers. The information comes from platform users who posted screenshots showing the requirement in some random videos.
At this time, Google has not made an official comment on the matter, so we don’t know what kind of videos and in which countries this is happening, but catches continue to appear on forums like Reddit and Twitter.
Pressing the options to change the video resolution, as shown in the image above, has a banner that says “Premium” below 2160p, also known as 4K. Pressing there to select the resolution will take you to the YouTube paid plan subscription page.
New venture for profit?
Google’s video platform is by far the largest in the world, but that isn’t directly reflected in the number of people willing to pay for its extra benefits. Therefore, YouTube administrators seem to have decided that it would be easier to remove features that are currently available for free, rather than trying to create differentiated features that are attractive enough to pay for.
We’ll have to wait for an official announcement to find out if what we’re seeing is just testing or a new policy that is slowly being implemented in different regions where YouTube is available.
