Twitter has announced that it will ban all ads that deny climate change from its platform. Echoing a policy already in place at Google, the social network made it clear in a blog post that ads that make climate change claims and contradict scientific consensus will be considered “inappropriate and prohibited.”
The company stated that climate denial should not be monetized on its platform and that “misrepresented announcements should not dampen important conversations about the climate crisis.”
Twitter also warned that it bases its decision on authoritative sources such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nations body responsible for evaluating man-made climate change science.
The latest IPCC report states that to limit global warming and prevent a critical temperature rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius, the world must act now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors.
In 2021, during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), the company launched a dedicated topic in parallel with the topic. hubs reliable information in the Explore, Research and Trends sections of the platform.
Twitter should continue to look for ways to help its users find reliable information about climate change.
