Last week, a Dell Precision 7670 laptop was spotted equipped with a proprietary computer. Compression Attached Memory Module† A CAMM takes up less space than traditional sodimms, but it was initially feared that this solution would only be available on Dell laptops. Meanwhile, the manufacturer shared more information in an interview with PCWorld.
For example, Senior Distinguished Engineer Tom Schnell states that the new modules have been developed in collaboration with various memory manufacturers and Intel. Compared to regular slats, a CAMM is screwed into the motherboard with contact pins that provide the connection. The sandwich design means they are thinner than their counterparts and can offer more capacity.
The first CAMM laptops would initially only be able to handle this type of memory. Dell adds that an adapter will be available for sodimms at a later date. Additionally, the company aims to make CAMM an official JEDEC standard that will allow this technology to be used by other manufacturers. JEDEC requires that licensing a standard be reasonably priced, non-competitive, and not discriminatory against other companies.
This adapter allows sodimms to be used with the CAMM connector.
