The Ministry of Industry and Commerce plans to reduce the cost of flying commercial aircraft by 2030 by switching to a single crew. To do this, the agency hopes to complete the development of a “virtual co-pilot” based on artificial intelligence by the end of 2024.

Russian planes may switch to single-pilot control by 2030

Information on this can be found in the tender published on the public procurement website. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is ready to allocate almost 2.9 billion rubles for technology development.

The project is being implemented as part of the “strategy for digital transformation and meeting modern requirements for advanced aircraft.” According to the documents, its implementation will require “the search for fundamentally new, innovative and intelligent approaches and technologies”.

To control the aircraft by a single pilot, it is planned to modernize the cockpit, recreate the technical appearance of the “virtual co-pilot” and integrate artificial intelligence into the future control system.

The state order was published on August 9. The company that will undertake its implementation will have to develop “about a dozen” technologies, as well as create an improved cabin model with an imitation of the environment.
