Apple refuses to use Chinese YMTC memory chips in iPhone, Nikkei Asia sources.

This year, Apple completed the certification of YMTC’s 128-layer 3D NAND flash memory. To date, this is the most advanced Chinese memory, although it is obtained from Samsung and Micron in terms of technical progress.

Apple came up with YMTC chips because they are at least 20% cheaper than the members. The first iPhones with YMTC memory were supposed to come out this year and be sold in the Chinese market.

But plans changed after the United States added YMTC to the list of “unreliable counterparties” on October 7. They banned the use of American technology for the production of equipment, so it can no longer produce memory for Apple.

YMTC was created in 2016 and started to be managed by Apple in 2018. [Nikkei Asia]
